"Specialist distributors in vegetarian, organic, Fairtrade, natural and fine foods in the UK and beyond. Suma is a worker co-op, owned and managed by its workers. At Suma we are proud of our status as the UK's largest worker owned co-operative and Europe's largest equal pay organisation. Suma is run by owner members who all have an equal share in the business and a say in decision making. Our members multi-skill and in any given week could be doing anything from picking customer orders in the warehouse to designing product packaging or sitting on Suma's elected Management Committee.

Suma was started in 1975 by Reg Tayler. Reg had already gained some experience of wholefoods in London, and when he moved to Leeds he opened a retail shop, Plain Grain. In August 1975, at a meeting attended by all the wholefood shops in the north of England*, he proposed they set up a wholefoods wholesaling co-operative in order to supply each other.

In 2001, Suma moved to purpose-built premises in Elland, where currently around 150 are employed.
