Following the merger last year of the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, Scottish Golf was born. A new Chair and a 9-strong board of directors, all with extensive business experience has come together at a time when many clubs are facing significant financial challenges with traditional membership in decline. Scotland is widely promoted as “The Home of Golf” and it is a game that since the 15th century has played a key role in the nation’s sporting consciousness. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club (The R&A;) is the game’s world governing body headquartered in St Andrews, but more significantly the nation is blessed with 606 golf clubs located across every community in Scotland, including unquestionably some of the best courses in the world; The Old Course, Turnberry, Carnoustie, Muirfield, Royal Troon, Gleneagles and Kingsbarns Links to name but a few.

With the game in Scotland requiring major change and modernisation, the challenge ahead for the new Chief Executive will be to reignite these sporting assets by transforming club culture and shifting traditional perceptions of the game. The successful candidate will lead change through the introduction of new formats and embracing digital technologies to appeal to a wider and more diverse audience – younger generations, families, women and those that would like to see golf clubs not purely as venues to play golf but also as a social hubs for the communities, making golf in Scotland a great experience for everyone.

This revolutionary strategy will break down traditional barriers to entry so that affordability, inclusiveness, welcoming and fun become the new adjectives synonymous with the game. Scottish Golf is also a “business” requiring the new CEO to attract greater levels of sponsorship to boost investment, to build strategic partnerships, and to develop impassioned teams who work hand in hand with the clubs to deliver this new and exciting vision.

Our ideal candidate will be a proven and highly visible board level business leader who can demonstrate transforming an organisation both culturally and commercially. He/she will possess the intellect, courage and outstanding communication skills to both define and passionately articulate the future vision and furthermore to inject the same passion for change to key stakeholders, clubs and sponsors. A person of absolute integrity with a genuine love for the game of golf in Scotland as well as the vibrancy, humility and modern thinking to appeal to a new audience will be critical.
