Business Description

Award-winning beer brewed with fresh surplus bread. All profits to @feedbackorg to end food waste.

Founder: Tristram Stuart, author and campaigner on the environmental and social impacts of food production, and founded both Toast and our charity partner Feedback.

Our award-winning beer is brewed by master brewers in Yorkshire. We also collaborate on exciting beers with craft breweries all over the UK and have released a special bread beer recipe for homebrewers.

Did you know that 44% of bread is wasted? We’re on a mission to change that. Our delicious beer is brewed with unsold loaves from bakeries and unused crusts from sandwich makers …such as ADELIE FOODS. The only other ingredients are hops, yeast and water.

We give 100% of profits to FEEDBACK, an environmental charity campaigning to end food waste. By enjoying Toast, you’re helping to make the food system work for people and the planet, not for profit.

We stumbled across the idea behind Toast at the Brussels Beer Project. Their Babylone beer is made using bread, and so named because of brewing's history. As far back as 4000BC, people were fermenting bread to create a “divine drink”. Fermentation is an age-old method of preserving food, and what better way to preserve bread than by brewing beer.

The process is no different to standard brewing. Well, there's one special difference of course - bread replaces 1/3 of the grains.

We worked with HACKNEY BREWERY in London on the recipe for our Pale Ale. We have continued to refine it with our current brewer HAMBLETON ALES in Yorkshire, using only British hops.

We've also collaborated with breweries to create exciting variations on our recipe. WIPER AND TRUE in Bristol created ‘Bread Pudding'.

Other collaborations include ST AUSTELL'S BREWERY in Cornwall who stocked us in pubs across the South West, KING STREET BREWHOUSE in Bristol who supplied cask beer to Shambala Festival and ESSEX STREET BREWHOUSE in London whose head brewer Vanesa has created a 'Brown Toast' Porter in addition to the Pale Ale (on tap now).

We launched in January 2016 after we featured on Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty's Friday Night Feast.

We began selling online and within a year we've achieved listings in Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's RIVER COTTAGE CANTEENS and FORTNUM AND MASONS, amongst loads of other awesome stockists nationwide.

Crowdfunder - On 22nd Mar 2017 we successfully raised £27,952 of £20,000 target with 449 supporters in 28 days
